Hemorrhoids are swollen veins that can develop in the anus and lower rectum. They can be caused by a number of things, such as straining during bowel movement or from increased pressure on the veins during pregnancy. The can also be internal, located just inside the rectum, or external, developing under the skin around the anus.
Symptoms of hemorrhoids include the following:
If you’re experiencing symptoms from hemorrhoids, don’t hesitate to call your Southaven gastroenterologist from Premier Gastroenterology, PC. Contact us at (662) 349-6113 today.
Our practice is now offering the CRH O’Regan System®. It is a simple, painless, and effective way to treat hemorrhoids. Previously, people would have to rely on ointments and creams to provide temporary relief to the symptoms, or surgery to fix the problem.
The system offers patients a unique procedure called hemorrhoid banding (or rubber band ligation) to treat the condition. It is much less invasive than a surgical hemorrhoidectomy, and it can be performed in minutes with little to no discomfort. Likewise, the treatment requires no preparation or sedation, and most patients can even return to work on the same day.
A physician will use gentle suction to place a small rubber band at the base of the hemorrhoid in an area lacking nerve endings. This process takes about 60 seconds. After a few days, the hemorrhoid will begin to shrink and fall off, probably without you even knowing. The rubber band prevents the hemorrhoid from receiving any blood supply from the rest of the body. The lack of blood will cause the banded tissue to die and separate from the rest of the body.
For many hemorrhoids, this treatment will usually be applied to one at a time. This way your doctor can keep track of how each treatment is going and ensure there are absolutely no complications to worry about.
The procedure itself is relatively painless, but some patients experience a feeling of fullness or a dull ache in the rectum during the first 24 hours. However, this pain can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications.
We’re no stranger to treating hemorrhoids. According to statistics, 3 out of every 4 adults will develop hemorrhoids over the course of their lifetime.
